Classics in Scotland: Past, Present and Future with Dr Alex Imrie

What does the study of the ancient world look like in Scotland? How has Classics evolved over the past century, and what does its future look like in our schools, universities and wider communities?

In this episode of Two Friends Talk History, I’m joined by Dr Alex Imrie, Teaching Fellow in Ancient History at the University of Edinburgh, to explore the history, work and future ambitions of the Classical Association of Scotland (CAS).

Founded in 1902, the Classical Association of Scotland has played an important role in promoting the study of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. But Classics in Scotland has its own distinctive story, shaped by the country’s educational system, cultural identity and intellectual traditions.

Alex is particularly well placed to explore this story. Alongside his academic work, he is a co-founder of the Ancient Voices programme and has been instrumental in initiatives supporting and expanding access to Classics in Scotland’s state schools. He also works as the Scottish Network Co-ordinator for the educational charity Classics for All.

Our conversation looks back at the origins of CAS and considers how the organisation has adapted to changing educational landscapes and opportunities. We discuss some of the challenges facing the teaching of Classics today, the projects working to make the subject more accessible, and why the ancient world continues to offer so much to contemporary learners.

Perhaps most importantly, we look ahead. What might the future of Classics in Scotland look like? How can we ensure that the study of the ancient world is accessible to a wider range of students and communities, and that new generations have the opportunity to discover its relevance and value?

This is a conversation about much more than ancient Greece and Rome. It’s about education, accessibility, community, and making space for new voices and perspectives in the study of the past.
